SOUPer Bowl
Friendship Center partners with the CCSU Ceramics Department and E.C. Goodwin Technical High School in an Empty Bowl Event to raise awareness of hunger and poverty in the community and elsewhere. All the proceeds from this event go to our Community Soup Kitchen that feeds approximately 250 people daily.
We named it “The SOUPer Bowl” to coincide with the actual Super Bowl, the annual championship game of the National Football League. We hold ours on the Thursday before the big game on Sunday.
The Empty Bowls project offers guests the unique opportunity to not only partake in a hearty meal featuring soups, breads, and beverages, but to select and bring home a soup bowl, which is intended to remind people of all the empty bowls in food-insecure households across the region and around the world.
Empty Bowls is an international grassroots effort to fight hunger. Potters and other craftspeople work with the community to create handcrafted bowls and guests are invited to a simple meal of soup and bread. In exchange for a $20 donation for adults, $15 for students, and $10 for children 12 and under guests will get to keep the handcrafted bowl as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. The E.C. Goodwin culinary department, area restaurants and groups will be providing more soup as well as bread and pastries for the event. 100% of the donations will benefit the Friendship Center’s Community Kitchen.
